In August 1775, Lt. Juan Manuel de Ayala brought his sailing ship into San Francisco Bay and anchored it in what is now Ayala Cove. He christened the island Isla de los Angeles. Indian use of Angel Island began at least 2,000 years ago. The Coastal Miwok Indians who inhabited Marin County reached the island in reed boats. Their village's choice sites were converted by the federal government for military bases and an Asian immigration station, known as the Ellis Island of the West.
