Shawn Peterson says he was brought up with the belief in “paying it back.” The Managing Partner of Beyond Basics Construction honors this commitment by putting $20 of every $100 earned into a donation of some kind.

“We live a very good life,” he says. “In order to live a productive and peaceful life, it’s essential to give back.”

After the pandemic hit, Shawn checked out what he could do for local businesses and was directed to Tiburon Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Executive Director DeAnn Biss. With her assistance, he picked the shops to help and began the process of installing Plexiglass shields and barriers throughout town. Shawn and his team also constructed planter boxes for Salt and Pepper so they could open up for outdoor dining. In addition, Shawn assisted St. Stephens Church to run conduit and cable in order for them to record their services. ALL work and materials was done pro bono! He even hired more workers to do these jobs, bringing his total of employees up to seven.

The Novato resident began in the construction business 30 years ago when he worked for his older brother – who now works with him. He also spent some years in land development, quitting when the 2008 depression hit.

Shawn is the Managing Partner for Beyond Basics Construction with headquarters at 1680 Tiburon Boulevard, Suite 5, across the street from the Tiburon Fire Department. His business partner, Van Sutton, is the Managing Partner for s Basics Tile and Stone in Danville. The two entities cooperate on various home projects.

Shawn and his wife, Sabina, have been married for 25 years and have two grown daughters, Dierdra and Christine, and a nine-year-old granddaughter, Madison.

Beyond Basic Construction’s Project Manager is Belvedere resident Amy DeVincentis, who recently joined Shawn when he moved his headquarters to Tiburon in February. An East Coast native, Amy earned her B.S. degree in Computer Information Systems from Bentley University in 1997. After graduation, she was a Software Specialist, Solutions Consultant, Business Systems Analyst, Applications Specialist and Project Manager before going into Real Estate.

Amy moved to Belvedere three years ago with her husband of 19 years, Jamie, and their two daughters: Katie, a rising 10th grader at St. Ignatius, and Allie, a soon-to-be 8th grader at Del Mar Middle School. Her job at Beyond Basics Construction entails all company communications and administration.

Beyond Basics Construction’s main focus is single-family home remodel and redesign. They also can start with raw land and put in the utilities, drainage, foundation and framing and go on to install the electrical, plumbing, sheet rock, cabinets and counter tops, everything up to turnkey ready. Shawn says he wants his business to stay small and be limited to working in the area from San Rafael to San Francisco.

Every Friday evening, Shawn sets up his propane grill in the Main Street parking lot and cooks a meal for his employees. “It makes for a good end of the week,” the self-proclaimed chef says. “We keep the recommended distance between us but still have a good time.”

Leading by example, Shawn encourages his fellow business owners to look around and pitch in. “Try to help each other in this troubled time,” he says. “Carpe Diem!”
